Should we consume protein before or after exercise? The American Journal of Clinical Nutrition says it might depend on our age.
By now you may know the importance of consuming protein and amino acids (the building blocks of muscle) in the time surrounding your training. The nutrient timing is very important in raising the effectiveness of our workout.
A Dutch study found that consuming protein before and after a weight training session is ideal. However older adults should only consume it after. Exercise may interfere with the gastrointestinal tract’s protein absorption. Everyone should consume protein via meal or supplement post exercise to ignite protein synthesis and begin the recovery process. (American Journal of Clinical Nutrition, November 17th, 2010)
